چکیده
Abstract Quambalaria are fungal pathogens of Corymbia , Eucalyptus and related genera Myrtaceae. They smut fungi (Ustilaginomycota) described from structures that resemble conidia conidiophores. Whether these spore forms have asexual or sexual roles in life cycles is unknown. An epidemic Q. pitereka destroyed plantations New South Wales Queensland (Australia) 2008. We sampled 177 individuals three C. variegata used AFLPs to test hypotheses the was spread by reproduction dominated a single genotype. There high genotypic diversity across ≥600 AFLP loci pathogen populations at each plantation, evidence based on neighbour-net analyses rejection linkage disequilibrium. The were not structured host location. Our data did support hypothesis but instead spreads exclusively reproduction, similar other fungi. Epidemics exacerbated monocultures established seed collected provenance. This study showcases an example endemic pathogen, with strictly outbreeding cycle has caused epidemics when susceptible hosts planted large monoculture plantations.

This is the first publication dedicated to the diversity of smut fungi in Panama based on field work, the study of herbarium specimens, and references taken from literature. It includes smuts parasitizing cultivated and wild plants. The latter are mostly found in rural vegetation. Among the 24 species cited here, 14 species are recorded for the first time for Panama. One of them, Sporisorium ov...
